Marathon Update 1.0.0.4 Fixes Your Biggest Complaints
Say goodbye to the thermal scope meta and bullet-sponge AI.
If there was one massive complaint echoing across the internet during the Marathon release, it was that the PvE elements were aggressively getting in the way of the PvP.
The UESC AI enemies were built like brick houses, meds were basically non-existent, and ammunition was so scarce you practically had to use harsh language to finish off your opponents. It forced players into a slow, cautious playstyle that completely disrupted the highly fast-paced, high-stakes extraction shooter loop where Marathon usually shines.
Well, the devs were actually taking notes. Bungie just dropped the massive 1.0.0.4 update, and it feels like they went through the community subreddit and literally checked off every single major complaint. Here is a breakdown of why this patch just saved your next drop into Tau Ceti.
More Ammo, More Meds, Less Hiding
The biggest headline here is the massive buff to the Perimeter map. Bungie has drastically cranked up the spawn rates for both Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates. If you drop in as a fresh-faced Runner, you no longer have to spend your first 10 minutes sprinting away from fights just to scavenge bandages.
On top of the environmental buffs, the free loadouts just got a whole lot deadlier. If you are running the MIDA, CyberAcme, or Arachne sponsored kits, your starting ammo has been officially increased. You finally have enough in the mag to actually hold your ground during those early spawn rushes.
The UESC Finally Got Nerfed
The UESC AI troops are supposed to provide friction, but they shouldn’t feel like bullet sponges that drain all your resources before you even see another player. Update 1.0.0.4 officially reduces the health of most UESC enemies, and slices the shield HP of UESC bosses by a small amount.
You still need to be careful, but your bullets are going to go much further now.

The Thermal Scope Meta is Officially Dead

If you’ve been spending any time in the Dire Marsh, you already know the pain of getting instantly beamed through the fog by a squad running thermal scopes. It was essentially legal wallhacks.
Bungie brought the nerf hammer down hard on thermals with this patch. Visual clarity has been heavily reduced, meaning you no longer get a crystal-clear 4K X-ray view of the map. Furthermore, they capped the max distances for the thermal highlight:
- Pistols: 40 meters (down from 55)
- Rifles/LMGs/SMGs: 60 meters (down from 65)
- Precision Rifles: 80 meters (down from 100)
- Snipers: 100 meters (down from 180)
You actually have to use your eyes and ears again. It levels the playing field tremendously and makes traversing the map feel like an actual stealth mission rather than a shooting gallery for snipers.
The Catch: Third-Partying Just Got Louder
While the nerfs and buffs are great, there is one massive change that is already causing chaos in the community: Bungie increased the range that gunfire and explosions can be heard from.
If you pull the trigger now, the entire server knows where you are. Expect to get third-partied heavily if you get into a protracted firefight with a boss.
You can read the complete, line-by-line breakdown on Bungie’s official patch notes page.
What’s Your Verdict?
In a brutal extraction shooter where your hard-earned loot is constantly on the line, quick balancing patches like 1.0.0.4 are exactly what keep the community coming back. Drop your thoughts in the comments below, are you swapping off the thermal scopes, or are you still braving the Dire Marsh with your old loadout?
