How to Cut Down Trees and Get Timber in Crimson Desert

Where to find Fine Timber

If you want to upgrade your wooden shields in Crimson Desert, you are going to need a lot of Timber and Fine Timber. However, being a lumberjack in Kliff’s world is a little more dangerous than your average survival game! Here is exactly how to get a Logging Axe, chop down trees, and process the wood into Crimson Desert timber without getting crushed.

Step 1: Buy a Logging Axe

Before you can start felling trees, you need the right tool. Fortunately, you can grab one almost immediately in the starting area.

  • Head to Hernand (the main starting town).
  • Look for the Provisioner’s Shop, which is located just a short walk away from the tavern where the armwrestling competition takes place.

  • Purchase a Logging Axe for around 35 Copper.

Step 2: Chop Down Trees (Hopefully Without Dying)

Once you have your Logging Axe equipped, walk up to any standard tree in the wild to begin chopping.

  • Use Your Targeting: Make sure you actually use your targeting controls to lock onto the trunk. If you just free-swing, you will miss the tree constantly and waste your stamina.
  • Watch Your Head: Keep swinging until the tree cracks. Get out of the way immediately! Unlike a lot of other RPGs, trees in Crimson Desert have physics. If a falling tree lands on you, it will deal heavy damage, *cough* Valheim.

Step 3: Process the Log into Timber

This is the step most new players miss! When the tree hits the ground, it does not automatically give you wood.

  1. Walk up to the fallen tree and hit it again with your Logging Axe.
  2. The massive tree will break apart into several smaller segments.
  3. Hit each individual segment with your axe.
  4. Each segment you break will usually yield 1x Timber and 1x Fine Timber (though you can sometimes get lucky and earn more per swing!).

Once you have a healthy stack of Timber in your inventory, head back to a Blacksmith to start upgrading your shields and gear!
