Epic Games Raises Fortnite V-Bucks Prices to “Pay the Bills”

The multi-billion dollar company behind the biggest battle royale in the world says development costs are getting too high.

If you thought the metaverse was going to be cheap, think again. The money printer over at Epic Games is apparently running low on ink.

In a recent update posted directly by Epic Games, the studio officially confirmed they are raising the real-world cost of Fortnite V-Bucks. Their official reasoning for the sudden price hike? They simply need to help “pay the bills.”

Crazy right? Yes, you read that correctly.

The multi-billion dollar company behind the Unreal Engine and the most successful battle royale in history is officially tightening its belt. It is an incredibly bold statement to make to your community, especially when you look at the absolute goldmine the studio sits on daily.

However, between funding endless pop-culture crossover events, securing massive music licenses, and building out a sprawling digital ecosystem, development costs are clearly ballooning.

To be fair, at least Epic is being somewhat transparent about the realities of modern game development. It is a stark contrast to live-service disasters like Highguard, which tried to silently squeeze its player base before ultimately collapsing completely. Epic knows exactly what they are doing. They know you are still going to buy that next crossover skin, even if it costs an extra dollar or two.

These new pricing tiers will officially lock into the storefront on March 19th. If you have been eyeing a specific bundle in the item shop, you might want to stock up on your digital currency right now. Otherwise, you will be paying a premium just to hit the Griddy on your opponents next season.
